Network & File Share between two Macs in Mac OS X (10.2 Jaguar)

1) Make sure both of the Macs have ethernet with an RJ-45 connection (standard on iMacs, iBooks, G4's and G3's and G3).

2) Purchase an ethernet crossover cable

3) Attach the ethernet crossover cable between the two macs. Connect the cable from the ethernet port on one Mac to ethernet on the other.

4) Power on both Macs

5) Click the System Preferences item in the dock, OR select System Preferences from the Apple Menu.

6) Click the Sharing folder in the System Preferences window

7) Click the Services Tab

8) Click the checkbox beside the item that says "Personal File Sharing" i.e. make sure the box to the left is checked.

9) In that same window, click Start. Just above the start button, a message will tell you that file sharing is starting up.

10) After file sharing has started up, quit the system preferences.

11) Perform steps 5-9 on the other Mac (if you want to share files in both directions)

12) To connect to the other Mac, click the Go menu in the menu bar and select Connect To Server

13) After a moment, a window will open. On the left had side of the window, the name of the other Mac will appear.

14) Click on it, and then click the Connect button.

15) Another window will open. A message will say "Connect to the file server 'xxxxxx' as:" - xxxxxxx being the name of the other Mac

16) Click Guest

17) Click Connect

18) If the other Mac has multiple users, you can select which user you want to share with. If not, then an icon will appear on your desktop

19) Double click the icon on the desktop (it may open automatically)

20) You will see a folder called "Drop Box". Drop items on this folder to copy them to the other Mac. This folder (on the other Mac) is located in the Users Folder->Home Folder->Public Folder->Drop Box

21) To disconnect from the other computer, drag the icon on the desktop to the trash.
