How To's

Set up a Macintosh for Roadrunner, DSL, Broadband or any high speed internet access.

  1. Have the Cable company (Roadrunner), DSL (Bellsouth), Broadband (Sprint) come out and set up their equipment
  2. Plug the ethernet cable from the Roadrunner or DSL box in to the ethernet port on your mac.
  3. Start up your Mac.
  4. Go to Apple Menu->Control Panels->Ethernet and set Connect Via to Ethernet and Configure to Using DHCP Server
  5. Close window and save changes.
  6. Go to Apple Menu->Control Panels->Internet and enter the information provided by the internet provider
  7. Click on the E-mail and Web tabs in the window and fill out all relevant information
  8. To change the default browser, click on the Web tab and select a different browser from the Pop up Menu at the bottom.
  9. The same can be done under the E-Mail Tab
  10. Close window and save changes
  11. Restart.
  12. Double clicking Browse the Internet icon on the desktop will get you on the net
  13. To verify things are working, go to AppleMenu->Control Panels->TCP/IP and check the IP Address
  14. If it is anything other than 169.xx.xx.xx, your Mac is talking to the providers box. If you get 169.xx.xx.xx then your Mac is not talking to the cable box. Check your cabling and restart. If it still does not work, contact your provider.
  15. You are done.
  16. If you have a problem getting or receiving e-mail, check the settings in the Internet Control Panel. Make sure the information is typed in EXACTLY as your provider has given you. One typo will cause it not to work.
  17. If you are using Netscape communicator, go here and follow the directions for setting up Netscape.
