How To's

Network Two Macs Together with Ethernet Cabling

1) Make sure both of the Macs have ethernet with an RJ-45 connection (standard on iMacs, iBooks, G4's and G3's and G3).

2) Purchase an ethernet crossover cable

3) Attach the ethernet crossover cable between the two macs. Connect the cable from the ethernet port on one Mac to ethernet on the other.

4) Power on both Macs

5) Go to the Apple Menu->Control Panels->File Sharing and click the Start/Stop Tab at the top of the window. If you are running OS 8.1 or earlier, the control panel is called "Sharing Setup" instead of File Sharing.

6) Type in an owner name and user name in the Owner Name and User Name fields. DO NOT type in a password. Typical names are iMac, or Mac1 or G4 or something that makes sense.

7) Click the button that says "Start" just below where it says file sharing off.

8) Close the window and save the changes

9) Go to the Apple Menu->Control Panels->Appletalk and select ethernet

10) Close the window and save the changes

11) Click one time on your hard drive - please wait about a minute. File sharing take a while to start up the first time.

12) Go to the File Menu->Get Info-> Sharing

13) Put a check in the Share this item and it contents checkbox

14) Beside the Everyone option, click on the pop-up and select Read and Write - this will be slightly different if you are using 8.1 or earlier.

15) Close the window and save the changes

16) Duplicate these steps on both Macs (naming them differently in the File Sharing control panel)

17) After both Macs are completed and set up, go to one of them and select the Chooser from the Apple Menu

18) Click on Appleshare - the other Mac name should show up on the right side of the window. Double click it.

19) Type in that Macs name in the next window (i.e. remove the name that is there) and click connect.

20) Select the hard drive and click ok. The hard drive will appear on the desktop. You are done.
