How To's

Set up Internet Access

Setting up internet access is easy, but having some background information will make it make more sense.
The bottom line is this: There are two ways to get at your internet information.

1) You can use the Internet Setup Assistant (located in the Assistants Folder) to follow a set of instructions to set it up

or

2) You can access and change the information directly by looking at the control panels that actually store the information. These control panels will vary a bit depending on which operating system you are using.

System 8.5 and later

System 8.1 or lower

Internet Config (not a control panel)

PPP

TCP/IP

Internet

Remote Access

TCP/IP

You can access these control panels by going to the Apple Menu and selecting Control Panels
Internet Config & Internet:
This control panel keeps information about your e-mail account (password and server information), your start up web page and which browser & email application you want to use. The Internet Config is not a control panel, but it located in the Internet folder located on your hard drive.
PPP & Remote Access:
These control panels keep your user name, password, and the dial up access number of your internet provider
TCP/IP:
This control panel contains the DNS (Domain Name Server) numbers as well as the search domain. Bottom Line: The DNS numbers are the address of your internet providers main computer - it's like address of your house. When you connect to the internet, your computer needs to know where to send its information, and DNS number is where the information is directed. Some providers do not require this information.
