How To's

Use the Extensions Manager

The Extensions Manager is a powerful tool to help troubleshoot Mac OS 9 System level problems.
Extensions are extra "programs" that are installed to give your Macintosh additional features. For example: Quicktime is a set of extensions that allows your Mac to play Quicktime Movies, watch streaming internet Video and plays audio MP3's. Quicktime can be turned off or on using the Extensions Manager.
Several programs such as AOL, Norton Utilities, RAM Doubler, Conflict Catcher, and Speed Doubler install multiple extensions that may cause conflicts with other applications. Turning these off can often resolve problems.
Using the Extensions Manager, which is located under the Apple Menu->Control Panels, can also cause certain Macintosh functions to NOT WORK - use it with caution. If you have Conflict Catcher, the extensions manager will be disabled. You have to turn it on using conflict catcher first, and then turn conflict catcher off using the now enabled Extensions Manager.
To disable third party (non-apple) control panels and extensions. Open the extensions manger and click the pop up menu next to selected set. Select Mac 9.x.x all. x being the version of OS 9 you are using. Then click the restart button at the bottom of the window.

After the Mac restarts, try your application again and see if the problem has gone away. If so, then you know there is a conflict between one or more third party extensions. Open the extensions manager and change OS 9.x.x all to My Settings. If it asks if you want to update the selected set, click update. You can then turn on extensions one at at time by clicking the checkbox next to each extensions and/or control panel. After each one is turned on, restart the Mac and try you application again. Keep doing this until the application does not work. Once it does not work, turn off that last extension that was turned on.

This is a long a repetative process. If you don't want to spend the time doing this, bring it in and let one of our technicians correct the issue for you.
